Minneapolis has third-highest tax burden for travelers, study says

An annual study released earlier this month by the Global Business Travel Association Foundation shows Minneapolis has the third-highest tax burden in the country for travelers.

The study ranks the top 50 U.S. destination cities by general sales tax and other "discriminatory travel taxes," including hotel lodging, car rental and restaurant meal taxes.

The combined taxes in Minneapolis cost an average traveler an additional $36.70 each day. The Twin City comes in behind No. 1 Chicago, which costs travelers an additional $41.04 a day, followed by New York with $38.65 in daily travel taxes.

MiniTime, a family travel planning website, says Minneapolis has the highest car rental tax, nearly 22 percent a day, and the highest restaurant tax, 10.78 percent, in the country. However, the site does give Minnesota good marks for not imposing sales tax on clothes or shoes when making a shopping trip to the Mall of America.

A ranking within the same study that only looks at discriminatory travel taxes -- those imposed specifically on travel services above general sales taxes -- ranks Minneapolis fourth-highest behind Portland, Boston and Indianapolis.

Florida destinations, including Fort Lauderdale, Fort Meyers and West Palm Beach, have the lowest travel tax burden, costing travelers $22.61 per day.
