Minneapolis homicide suspect arrested out of state

A 17-year-old boy who has been sought by police for two weeks in the shooting death of a Minneapolis woman has been arrested out of state, the Minneapolis police department said Saturday.

"The Minneapolis Police Department would like to thank to media and public for their help in this case," police spokesman John Elder said in a statement.

Tips from the public helped lead police to the suspect, according to WCCO.

The Star Tribune quotes sources who say authorities tracked the suspect to Missouri, where he was apparently hiding out with relatives.

Police issued a warrant for the suspect's arrest last weekend in connection with the April 11 homicide of Ayan Abdulahi, 21, of Bloomington. She died from a single gunshot wound to the head at a home in the 2400 block of Portland Avenue South.

Abdulahi was found by police who responded to a call of shots fired at the residence.

Authorities said earlier they believed others were helping the suspect avoid capture, and said they will “aggressively pursue charges” against anyone who aided him in hiding from law enforcement.

The Star Tribune said the suspect was arrested this week after police found out he was staying with relatives near Kansas City, according to sources.

The homicide was the seventh one in Minneapolis so far this year, the newspaper notes.
