A Minneapolis man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of his wife and teenage stepdaughter, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Monday.

Gonzalo Galvan, 50, shot his wife and her 15-year-old daughter at their home in the 2200 block of 10th Avenue South in Minneapolis Friday evening because they were trying to leave him, according to the criminal complaint.

Galvan’s wife had multiple gunshots to her head and the teenage girl had multiple gunshots to her head and body.

A 7-year-old boy, the son of Galvan and his wife, was in the house at the time. He was not injured, but police say he witnessed the shootings. He is now in protective custody with Hennepin County.

Galvan was arrested at the scene and admitted to police that he killed the victims, saying they had backpacks containing money and were planning to leave him and take the boy with them, according to the complaint. He also told police where to find the gun.

The Hennepin County medical examiner will release the victims' identities and the official cause of their deaths.

Galvan is in custody on $2 million bond and is expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday, according to the Star Tribune.
