A Minneapolis man has pleaded guilty to shooting his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, who came to their house to drop off children for a visit.
Rodney Velho, 45, pleaded guilty to intentional second-degree murder Monday in Hennepin County District Court. Velho shot and killed Kevin Logan Jr., 31, on April 19, 2020.
According to the criminal complaint, Velho was celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday at her house at the 11800 block of 80th Avenue in Maple Grove.
Velho’s girlfriend told him Logan, the father of her children, would be dropping them off for a scheduled visit.
Logan arrived shortly before 6 p.m., according to surveillance footage. A witness at the house said Velho’s girlfriend introduced him to Logan and they shook hands.
At a Monday hearing, Velho admitted that he then got into an argument with Logan and that they both said they had guns. Velho thought Logan might retrieve his gun and shot him, despite not seeing Logan’s gun.
After Logan fell backwards, Velho shot him two more times.
Velho then fled the apartment when his girlfriend called the police. His girlfriend told police her ex was unarmed and that Velho did not have reason to shoot him.
Velho will be sentenced on May 10. He is expected to receive 20 years in prison, according to the Hennepin County District Attorney’s Office.
