Minneapolis NAACP asks for special prosecutor in Jamar Clark case

The Minneapolis NAACP is calling on Attorney General Lori Swanson to appoint a special prosecutor to reopen the Jamar Clark case.

In a letter to Swanson, Nekima Levy-Pounds, the president of the Minneapolis NAACP, cited several "significant concerns" with the investigation into the fatal shooting of Clark by Minneapolis police last November.

Those concerns included:

  • "Conflicting" information presented by Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman;
  • "Widespread public doubt" about the officers' accounts of what led up to the shooting;
  • The role the police department played in investigation the shooting;
  • "Inconclusive DNA evidence";
  • And police policies that were "likely violated" during the incident.

Last month, Freeman announced charges against the officers were "not warranted" in Clark's death, and since then activists seeking justice for Clark have called for the case to reopened. Earlier this month, Freeman released a statement maintaining that if people go through the evidence posted online (available here), they will agree that no charges can be brought if applied to the legal requirements.

Freeman's office told BringMeTheNews Wednesday it has "no comment" about the NAACP's letter.

Swanson's office told KSTP it had not yet received the letter so it would not yet comment. The news station adds there is no state law that allows the attorney general's office to appoint a special prosecutor.
