Minneapolis police: 9 arrested during Uptown unrest Thursday night

It happened near the parking ramp where Winston Smith was fatally shot by law enforcement.

Minneapolis Police Department says nine individuals were arrested Thursday night during the unrest that followed the fatal shooting of Winston Smith.

Smith was shot and killed on top of a parking ramp in Minneapolis' Uptown neighborhood Thursday afternoon, after two deputies serving on a U.S. Marshals Service task force opened fire, according to investigators. That evening, there were reports of clashes with police, property damage and looting in the area near where the shooting occurred.

Nine people were arrested in the area of West Lake Street and Fremont Avenue that evening, most by Minneapolis police but one by the Minnesota State Patrol:

  • Two for probable cause riot
  • Two for fourth-degree assault
  • Two for probable cause riot and arson
  • One for obstruction
  • One for probable cause riot and weapons
  • One for probable cause damage to property

All nine were booked into Hennepin County Jail.

Minneapolis police are asking anyone with information about any additional criminal behavior that night to leave a tip with CrimeStoppers (1-800-222-TIPS or at www.CrimeStoppersMN.org).

The police department said it had permission to use CS Gas and 40 MM marking rounds, but "utilized other non-lethal mechanisms for crowd dispersal."
