One suspect is in custody in connection with the early morning shooting of a Minneapolis police officer.

At an afternoon news conference, Minneapolis police officials said they arrested a 44-year old man at a house in the 1100 block of Logan Avenue North at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and domestic assault, and police said they are still investigating whether the suspect was involved in the shooting.

For hours, a manhunt was underway in north Minneapolis as police officers sought the suspect.

Assistant Chief Matt Clark said the officer who was shot is in fair condition at North Memorial Medical Center.

Clark did not name the officer, but both the Star Tribune and WCCO identified him as Jordan Davis.

The officer was shot around 5 a.m. on Saturday morning. The officer and his partner had responded to a domestic assault call and were standing near their marked squad car at 24th Avenue North and Fremont Avenue North when a single shot was fired and hit one of them.

In the hours after the shooting, officers with police dogs searched garages and alleys in the Jordan neighborhood near the scene, and closed off streets in the area.

At least three dogs were seen searching an inner perimeter that spans several blocks, seeking articles of clothing or any other suspicious evidence.

KSTP cites a source in the police department who said that a gun was recovered that could possibly be the weapon used in the shooting.

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau met with the officer and his wife at the hospital before stepping outside to brief reporters on the incident.

"There is little doubt that an officer was the intended target of this shooting and that this officer just happened to be the one who was there," said Harteau.

"This is a reminder to all that every one of our officers face such danger simply because they choose to wear a uniform. They deserve our support and gratitude. We ask for continued prayers for this officer, his family and every officer who is out protecting and serving their communities,” Harteau said.
