Minneapolis Police open 'internal investigation' following Star Tribune report on destroyed records

The paper said officers at the 2nd Precinct disposed of documents during riots at the 3rd Precinct.

The Minneapolis Police Department said it is conducting an internal probe following a Star Tribune report that officers at the 2nd Precinct destroyed case records during last year's unrest at the 3rd Precinct.

The report — which you can read here — says investigators disposed of "inactive case files, search warrants and records of confidential informants." They cited concerns about the impact on cases if protesters took over the 2nd Precinct Police Station in Northeast Minneapolis, as was happening at the 3rd Precinct about 4 miles away in south Minneapolis in the days following George Floyd's murder.

The story explains, in detail, the officers' actions, as well as the potential impact on evidence in at least one active criminal case.

Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson John Elder, in an email statement to , said MPD is "conducting an internal investigation to understand what happened at the 2nd Precinct, how the decisions were made and whether there were broader issues with documents, records or files stored in our facilities during the riots."

If there are any disciplinary decisions to be made at the end of this investigation, they would go through the standard process, he added.

Protesters ultimately did not go near the 2nd Precinct. The 3rd Precinct was taken over by rioters and set ablaze after the city ordered officers to evacuate from the site. There were also fires and protests outside the 5th Precinct Police Station (31st Street and Nicollet Avenue, about 2 miles west of the 3rd Precinct) during the unrest, though the building remained standing.
