The Minneapolis Police Department Friday released the name of the officer who got into a fatal collision with a motorcycle last week while responding to an officer-related shooting, KSTP reports.

The MPD identified the officer as Joshua Young, who joined the department in 2006. Young's squad car collided with a motorcycle driven by Ivan Romero, 24. Romero was killed and his passenger was injured.

Young was responding to an incident in South Minneapolis during an robbery suspect's altercation with officers with the MPD.

The officers were shot in the legs and the suspect, Terrance T. Franklin, 22, was killed.

The MPD said Young is currently assigned to the third-precinct, and served in the Minnesota National Guard in combat deployments to Somalia and Iraq. Among his department honors are a Medal of Commendation and a Life Saving Award.

In a news conference earlier this week, Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau said the officer properly used his lights and siren of his squad car as he went through a red light and entered the intersection at 26th Street and Blaisdell Avenue at about 16-17 mph.

According to Harteau, the motorcyclist struck the rear passenger area of the squad car. Also, all interviews with related to the crash have been conduction and the Minnesota State Patrol is conducting an reconstruction of the accident.

Meanwhile, the investigation is ongoing into the officer-related shooting, and relatives of the man say they are frustrated because they are not getting answers from the MPD.
