Minneapolis police union president loses re-election after 16 years on the job

Long-serving Minneapolis police union President John Delmonico, noted for his vocal criticism of Mayor Betsy Hodges, is out following an unsuccessful re-election bid.

Delmonico earned 228 votes, not enough to overcome challenger Lt. Bob Kroll who won with a solid 414, according to a Facebook post from the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis.

Kroll is also a veteran police leader, having served as Federation vice president for nine years, the union's website indicates.

Following the Thursday night vote tally, Kroll told the Star Tribune he looks forward to continuing his working relationship with Delmonico.

Kroll, the paper notes, has a few marks on his record. Several internal probes have focused on him, once leading to his demotion.

And one public incident happened in 2007, when it was reported he insinuated U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison was a terrorist, the AP reported at the time. He denied the claims, and the department issued a public apology.

His soon-to-be predecessor, Delmonico, has served as president since 1999, WCCO reports.

He gained attention in the local media last year for his criticism of Minneapolis Mayor Hodges regarding her role in the "pointergate" controversy; the two also had a war of words that started in October with the mayor's "open letter," in which she commented about problems with police culture.

Delmonico responded with his own op-ed, accusing Hodges of "spreading misconceptions."

The two reportedly mended fences following the controversies.
