Minneapolis restaurant to raise cold cash for frigid Minnesota town

A small northern Minnesota town known for being one of the coldest places in the state is getting special treatment by a downtown Minneapolis restaurant for upholding its reputation.

Embarrass, the state's "cold spot," got the attention of Hell's Kitchen owners Steve Meyer and Mitch Omer when they heard the town was facing air temperatures colder than Mars (which later turned out to be debatable) during a stretch of extreme cold earlier this month.

The mercury dipped to 47 below on Jan. 2 – before the Polar Vortex arrived in Minnesota a couple days later, which actually raised temperatures to -37 degrees. The official lowest temperature on the books is 57 below on Feb. 2, 1996.

So, the owners got to thinking about what they could do for the chilled-to-the-bone town of 600.

After what was initially an offer to provide a free brunch for the entire town, a community fundraiser to benefit Embarrass' volunteer fire department and the region's annual fair was born.

The Star Tribune says Meyer and Omer are making the four-hour trek up north to sling their legendary Lemon Ricotta flapjacks on Feb. 22. Zups, a grocery store in Babbitt, is donating bacon.

According to the restaurant's "BITE ME" blog, "nearby towns such as Tower, Ely and Aurora asked if they could come. Yup, yup, yup. Everyone’s welcome to snag a ticket and support 2 wonderful causes."

Tickets go on sale Feb. 1 for $7 in advance or $10 at the door.
