From the city of Minneapolis:

The City of Minneapolis is adding another tool to help folks learn when a Snow Emergency is declared in Minneapolis. New this year, a dozen digital billboards around town will alert drivers to when a Snow Emergency is declared, thanks to a partnership between the City and Clear Channel Outdoor. The new alert system adds to the many existing ways the City already works to help folks learn when a Snow Emergency is in effect.

Throughout this winter, ads to encourage people to sign up for Snow Emergency alerts will appear on the dozen Clear Channel Outdoor digital billboards in Minneapolis. Once a Snow Emergency is declared, the ads will be replaced with ones that tell drivers that a Snow Emergency is in effect, and to call the Snow Emergency hotline to find out where to park.

“We already have many creative ways of informing residents and visitors about Snow Emergencies, and thanks to Clear Channel Outdoor, we have a great new one,” said Mayor R.T. Rybak. “This partnership will help the City do its job of clearing the streets and keeping people safe during a Snow Emergency, and will help drivers keep money in their wallets by keeping their cars from being towed.”

The City currently has many tools people can use to find out when a Snow Emergency is declared. They include text and email alerts, automated phone calls, a Snow Emergency hotline, Facebook, Twitter and the City’s website. This new tool will help reach drivers who may not have gotten the news.

“With these digital billboards we have just about every method of reaching people except for skywriting or carrier pigeons,” said Council Member Sandy Colvin Roy, who chairs the Transportation and Public Works Committee. “Our Snow Emergency Twitter account is the eighth most followed for a local government in the nation. When it comes to creative communication, Minneapolis excels.”

“As a Minneapolis business we understand the complexities that a Snow Emergency creates,” said Clear Channel Outdoor branch president Susan Adams Loyd. “Through the use of the Clear Channel digital billboards, we can transmit a simple call to action that will immediately reach the citizens of Minneapolis. Our digital boards are widely viewed and command attention which is exactly what a Snow Emergency warrants. In fact, the dozen boards that will be used for this program will be seen by more than one million people throughout the community each day during those designated Snow Emergencies. We are proud to partner with the City in this important public service.”

When enough snow falls, a Snow Emergency would be declared and drivers will then need to follow Snow Emergency parking rules so plow drivers can do the best job possible. Failure to follow the Snow Emergency parking rules can result in a ticket and tow.
