Minnesota begins online voter registration

Minnesota has become the 15th state in the country to offer online voter registration, the Star Tribune reports.

The site,, is live now and available for people to start registering for the first time, update their current registration or complete an application for overseas absentee ballots.

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie said in a statement that other states "have demonstrated that online registration is secure and that it saves taxpayers money."

It will also save military and overseas voters time, Ritchie said in the statement. He pointed out that more than 10,500 absentee ballots were successfully cast by those voters last year, and before, the forms had to be printed or scanned, and mailed or faxed.

While online voter registration is available, Ritchie noted that the system will not replace paper applications.

The online registration will undergo the same verification process as paper applications, Ritchie added.

The implementation of online voter registration comes as more than 35 municipalities and 113 school districts prepare to hold elections Nov. 5.

Online voter registration will be accepted through Oct. 15. After that, unregistered voters can register Election Day at their polling places.

Despite having more than 700,000 unregistered voters, Minnesota still has the highest voter turnout in the country, CNN reports.
