Minnesota city going for high-five record to help ailing boy

A boy in St. Anthony is looking for a hand – make that lots of hands – to break a world record.

WCCO reports 9-year-old Evan Thornton is at the center of an effort to break the record for the most high-fives in a minute Thursday afternoon in St. Anthony. Thornton is suffering from a rare form of bone cancer and the group is taking donations for cancer research.

The current world record is 212 high-fives in one single minute, says Guinness World Records.

Donations are not mandatory to participate in the event, which will take place near the visitor's center at Silverwood Park. Organizers will start lining people up just before 5 p.m. for the attempt at the record, WCCO says.

The world record attempt is part of "National High Five Day," an annual event held on the third Thursday in April by the National High Five Project. The project also sells items in conjunction with the event, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to five different cancer research centers.

The website Record Setter has videos of 45 different high-five records, from longest high-five and longest high-five chain, to most high-fives received while balancing a golf putter on chin and most high-fives from a dog in 30 seconds.

Record Setter claims the most high-fives in a minute is 268.
