With gripping cold about to bear down on Minnesota it should come as no surprise that colleges and universities in the state top the list of the coldest colleges in the country.

In fact, the two coldest schools are separated by less than a mile in Moorhead. Minnesota State University-Moorhead was named the the coldest school by College Prowler, while Concordia-Moorhead comes in at a cool second.

The Huffington Post reports the ranking is based on "student reviews of the weather on campus, average high and low temperatures during the summer and winter, and the average summer and winter precipitation amounts."

One of those reviewers said of the climate in Moorhead, "The winters are brutal and the summers are too short."

Nine of the Top 10 on College Prowler's list are in Minnesota, the lone outsider was the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

Top Ten Coldest Colleges List:

1. Minnesota State University-Moorhead

2. Concordia College Moorhead

3. College of St. Benedict

4. St. Olaf College

5. University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

6. Carleton College

7. University of Northwestern (St. Paul)

8. Macalester College

9. University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

10. Minnesota State University-Mankato

Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter also finished 12th, according to the ranking.

Minnesota college's may find it hard getting off the list after this year too. December 2013 posted the coldest average temperature for the month in the last 13 years.

By the way, the 40 below temperatures recorded in International Falls and Embarrass Thursday were colder than the temperature recorded on Mars yesterday, a balmy 26 below. A planet 140 million miles further from the sun was warmer than northern Minnesota Thursday night.

With news like that, it's no wonder some Minnesota travel agencies are booming this winter.
