Minnesota dogs compete in the Westminster Dog Show
A dog from Minnesota could be named Best In Show at the biggest dog show in the country.
Tuesday marks the final day of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and Jim and Elfie Shea, of Blaine will be showing their Samoyed, Luda.
The Sheas told ABC Newspapers Luda was invited to the Westminster show in New York City after ranking among the top four Samoyeds in the country last year. It will be the couple's first time at the prestigious dog show after breeding and showing Samoyeds for nearly 40 years, the paper said.
If you don't know what a Samoyed is, well, they're pretty adorable:
The kennel club says Samoyeds are an ancient breed developed by the nomadic Samoyed people of Siberia. They were bred to herd reindeer, hunt, haul sledges and keep guard. Since they are a working breed, the club says Samoyeds are happiest with owners who give them a job – like fetching the paper.
According to the dog show's website, Luda will be competing against 17 other Samoyeds for Best in Breed – you can watch it here.
A dog that wins Best of Breed moves on to face group competition – Luda is in the Working Group. The dogs who win their group round move on to the final round to compete for Best In Show and Reserve Best In Show (second place).
Another Minnesota dog at the show won an award Monday. Only, a Berger Picard from Eclipse Kennels in Elko, won Best in Breed but was eliminated after a German Shepard was named winner of the Herding Group.
You can watch the competition on the Nat Geo WILD channel from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 14, and the group stages and Best in Show will be live on FS1 from 7-10 p.m.
