A Minnesota pilot and three family members survived a crash landing in a private plane in northeastern New Mexico, officials say.

The pilot, identified by police as James A. Fretham, 50, of Chanhassen, was in critical condition after the Wednesday night incident, and his wife Elizabeth Fretham, 49, and two daughters, ages 15 and 21, were treated for injuries and released from a hospital, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

The pilot remained hospitalized in stable condition Thursday afternoon, the Star Tribune reported.

The six-seat propeller Cessna 210 had left Ames, Iowa, the Albuquerque Journal reports. There were thunderstorms in northern New Mexico Wednesday night, but contributing factors have not been determined, that newspaper reports.

An initial Federal Aviation Administration report says only that the plane "landed short of the runway."

The FAA is investigating.
