Seventeen-year-old Trenton Bass was paralyzed after suffering a neck injury during a high school football game in southwestern Minnesota Friday night.

Bass, a running back for Hills-Beaver Creek High School, which is about 30 minutes east of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, broke two vertebrae above his shoulder line when he was tackled in a game against Mountain Lake Area, according to his YouCaring page

Bass underwent surgery to repair the vertebrae Friday night and has already shown signs of improvement.

According to a prayer page on Facebook, Bass has gone from having no feeling below his breastbone to having "more feeling down his torso" while gaining more strength in his arms and upper body.

"It was a great day for Trenton! He got moved out of the ICU late this afternoon and is now on the neuro acute floor. He has been eating more today and has a lot more energy. He has gained even more strength in his arms and upper body. He does have more feeling down his torso as well! Every small step forward is a blessing and an answered prayer. We truly appreciate all of the love, support, and prayers from every single person. Continue to stay #TrentonStrong"

Hills-Beaver Creek plays nine-man football. The high school has just 91 students, per the Minnesota State High School League
