A bill establishing an online marketplace for Minnesotans to shop for health insurance is set for a House vote Monday.

MPR reports the health exchange bill has sailed through committees but may slow down on the House floor, where 50 amendments are waiting to be debated.

State officials estimate at least 1 million Minnesotans will use the health exchange to comparison shop for insurance coverage, once the system becomes active in October.

The Senate is likely to begin considering the measure later this week, the Star Tribune reported.

The legislation getting hammered out at the Capitol will set the terms for how the system will work and how it will be funded. MPR says one of the chief differences between the House and Senate bills has to do with funding. The House measure funds the program by using a slice of insurance premium payments. The Senate would use part of the tobacco tax.

To date, even some lawmakers have expressed surprise at the speedy path the health exchange has taken through the Legislature.
