Hennepin County said in a news release 27 families legally adopted 41 children during finalization hearings Saturday morning. Twenty adoptions were finalized in Ramsey County, according to the county's Facebook page.

“It is absolutely the best day of the year,” Margaret A. Daly, who heard six adoption cases Saturday, told the Star Tribune. “You see the tough journey these kids have been on; it’s incredible.”

This year, the number of families adopting children this year has doubled, due in large part to a change in state law, which goes into effect Jan. 1. The law standardizes the way adoptive parents are reimbursed for vital services that many adopted children need, like therapy and medical care.

"These kids have endured a lot of heartache and trauma that kids their age shouldn't have," Nancy Farrell told KSTP. She and her husband adopted siblings 7-month-old Abigail, 9-year-old Mathew and 12-year-old Jasmin. "We want them to reach their full potential."

The Minnesota Department of Human Services says there are still 520 children waiting for adoption in Minnesota. Nearly 20 percent of those children are siblings and six in 10 are kids are older than 6, according to DHS.

Another adoption event is set for February, where there's expected to be a rush of parents adopting teenagers, who will benefit from funding increases under the new state law, the news release said.

The aim of the new law is to remove disincentives from adoption and decrease the number of children and teens who languish in foster care, the county says.
