Minnesota lifts freeze on accepting TurboTax returns

The Minnesota Department of Revenue has begun accepting state tax returns filed through the popular tax preparation provider TurboTax as of 3 p.m. Saturday. The state had frozen TurboTax returns on Thursday evening over concerns about potential fraud, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The department suspended TurboTax returns after some users discovered that when they logged into TurboTax they were told that a return has already been filed in their name.

Intuit, which owns TurboTax, has said its systems were not breached, and it believes the personal data was stolen elsewhere.

"We took this step after Intuit implemented new targeted security measures,” the Revenue Department said in a statement on its website Saturday. "We will continue reviewing returns and will remain in contact with the company."

About 270,000 Minnesota taxpayers have already filed their state taxes and revenue officials flagged several thousand that used TurboTax for further review.

If you already filed your Minnesota return using TurboTax, you don't need to do anything. The department said it will review all returns and contact any taxpayers whose returns might have problems.

Despite the issue with Turbo Tax, the Revenue Department said electronic filing is still the best way for residents to submit their taxes.
