Minnesota man a semi-finalist for fastest skid-loader in North America

Jake Stier of Racine, Minn. will face off against 31 other semi-finalists from across the the United States and Canada in the New Holland Construction skid steer tournament in Louisville, Ky. The Austin Daily Herald says Stier has been driving skid loaders since he was about 7 years old.

Another semi slips into icy water

A third semi-truck slid into a frozen lake Friday afternoon. The Star Tribune reports the 18-wheeler crashed on I-494 near Rockford Road in Plymouth. No one was injured. This is the third time in a week that a semi had to be recovered from icy water. A semi traveling on Hwy. 14 near Waseca slid onto Clear Lake Wednesday afternoon. Last week, a semi pulling a Target trailer plunged into a pond along I-94 near Monticello.

House explodes north of Freeborn; man injured

A house about a mile north of Freeborn, Minn., exploded Friday afternoon, severely injuring a 75-year-old man. Fire largely destroyed the home. Investigators were probing what might have caused the blast. The house had recently been sold.

Four Twin Cities finalists named for the James Beard Awards
