Minnesota man arrested on rape charge after updating Facebook status

West Fargo police investigators say a 20-year-old sex offender from Minnesota caught their attention when he started updating his Facebook page, Forum Communications reports.

Tyler Howard Graening in several posts to the social media site referred to his relationship with a 14-year-old, noting that it was complicated and they were engaged to get married, Forum reports. It wasn't long before he was charged with felony gross sexual imposition, felony failure to register as a sexual offender and corruption of a minor, Forum reports.

The 14-year-old acknowledged the sexual relationship and said that at one time she had believed she was pregnant, Forum reports.

It was hardly the first time police used Facebook to catch crime suspects. Huntington Beach police in California earlier this month arrested an 18-year-old suspected in a riot after he "liked" a photo of himself at the riot posted on the police Facebook page.

Mashable collected the stories of eight of the dumbest criminals caught through Facebook – including several who logged into Facebook at the homes they were robbing (one forgot to log out). Yahoo! News reports that police are increasingly viewing social media as a tool in their search for suspects.
