A Minnesota man was killed in a trench collapse in western Wisconsin.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office says 22-year-old Joseph T. Sanderson became trapped in the collapse at his parents' home at N7155 690th Street, in Martell, with his father and a family friend immediately trying to dig him out.

Sanderson and others had been burying a water line when the collapse happened.

Pierce County deputies joined in the rescue attempt when they arrived on the scene.

Sanderson was eventually pulled free but unconscious. He was taken to Regions Hospital, where he, sadly, did not survive.

The Pioneer Press reports Sanderson was helping with the project at his parents' place. No construction companies were involved.

His obituary, published in the Hastings Star Gazette, states he was a Hastings High School graduate, and describes him as a "hard-working country boy that loved Chevy trucks, deer hunting, hanging out with friends, playing hockey and various card games."
