Minnesota man facing charges for voting in 2012 – while he was on probation

A northern Minnesota man already in prison is now facing charges – and more time behind bars – for a crime that authorities say happened in a voting booth three years ago.

35-year-old Joshua Allen Thompson is accused of voting in the 2012 presidential election, which would have been a felony considering he was on probation and ineligible to cast a ballot at the time, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

He was booked into the St. Louis County Jail in Duluth on Monday, according to a roster report.

The Duluth News Tribune says Allen was on probation for domestic assault by strangulation when he voted that November, and is currently in prison for a separate case involving domestic assault and a weapons offense.

Illegal felon voting rampant in Minnesota?

While this particular breed of voter fraud might not be something you hear about very often, one group says it's alarmingly common in Minnesota.

Election Integrity Watch says that as of 2011, 113 people were convicted in Minnesota for ineligible felon voting in relation to the 2008 General Election.

The group's report noted that may be the "highest number of voter fraud convictions obtained in any state."

The convictions, they said, came despite a number of complaints to county attorneys around the state regarding voter fraud by ineligible felons.

Furthermore, the group complained that a majority of the felons who cast their ballots did so using election day registration, which, at the time of the report, had "no mechanism" to catch such ineligible voters.

This year, a measure introduced to the state legislature would have restored the voting rights of ex-felons on probation or parole, but it failed to garner enough votes.
