A 64-year-old man who left Minnesota to help repair public works in his birth country Somalia was fatally shot Monday, FOX 9 reports.

According to MPR, Abdullahi Anshoor's family says police told them a group of armed men killed him and took his car while he was in Mogadishu. It's not known if he was specifically targeted.

Anshoor was a naturalized citizen of the United States, a notable civil engineer who lived in Brooklyn Park after moving to the U.S. when the fighting in Somalia's civil war intensified, MPR says. But last year he returned to Mogadishu, to help rebuild its public works after the years of violence.

FOX 9 reports Anshoor was currently working on fixing the sewer system in the Somali capital. He managed St. Paul's McKnight housing tower, which has many Somali tenants, and was an employee of St. Paul Public Housing.

Minnesota is home to the largest Somali-American community in the U.S., with an estimated 30,000 Somalis living mostly in the Twin Cities.

Terror group al-Shabab operates in much of the country's lower half, including Mogadishu, the National Counterterrorism Center says. Over the past year, the group has claimed responsibility for the assassination of Somali peace activists, international aid workers, numerous civil society figures, and journalists.
