Minnesota motorcyclists hit road for annual 'Spring Flood Run'

Maybe the weather doesn't feel like spring, but that won't make a difference to Minnesota motorcyclists Saturday as they hit the road for the state's annual "Spring Flood Run."

The Associated Press reports that up to 30,000 motorcyclists will kick off the riding season with the annual event, which stretches 90 miles from The Twin Cities to Winona, between the Mississippi and St. Croix Valley roadways.

To prepare for the event, law enforcement will step up enforcement in southeastern Minnesota, as well officials will in Wisconsin.

Motorists are advised to keep watch for motorcyclists Saturday. Fortunately, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety says, there no have been no motorcycle fatalities during the last 10 years of the Spring Flood Run.

The Spring Flood run commemorates an act of kindness during the 1965 Mississippi River Flood, when a group of 12 motorcyclists rode from the Twin Cities to Winona to help out with sandbagging.

Today the event's proceeds benefit the Gillette Children's Hospital.

Brian Zepp of the KQRS Morning Show is leading Saturday's run, which will also feature live music at the run's destination in Winona.

Organizers say the Spring Flood Run has gone on annually, and has never been canceled due to inclement weather.
