Minnesota musher wins his third Beargrease race

It's Anderson's third win since 2011.

We have a winner! And quite literally "we," because he's one of us.

Ryan Anderson of Ray, Minnesota, crossed the finish line of the 373-mile John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, race organizers said on Facebook. The race started Sunday at 11 a.m.

Here's video of his finish:

This is Anderson's third Beargrease title – he won the race in 2011 and 2015, too. The only other mushers to win more than two Beargrease titles are Nathan Schroeder (2010, 2013, 2014 and 2016) and Jamie Nelson (1988, 1995, 1997 and 1998), the Duluth News Tribune says.

Next up for the champion will be his first Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, a 1,000-mile trek through Alaska that'll be held next month. Schroeder, who is from Warba, Minnesota, will also be racing the Iditarod, according to the race's website.

About the race

The Beargrease marathon – which is the longest sled dog race in the contiguous United States – began in 1980, according to race website.

It's named after John Beargrease, a musher from Beaver Bay who delivered mail by dogsled between Two Harbors and Grand Marais in the early 1800s.

The race draws experienced mushers from all over North America, including Alaska and Canada, and serves as a qualifier for the Iditarod.
