Minnesota is the worst when it comes to racial integration, according to a new ranking by the personal finance website Wallethub.com, and second-to last when it comes to racial progress.

The website ranked at all 50 states and the District of Columbia on 10 measures of racial integration in an effort to compare black and white groups, putting Minnesota at No. 51 for racial integration.

Minnesota ranks among the worst in the following categories:

  • Highest gap in median annual income (No. 50)
  • Highest gap in homeownership rate (No. 50)
  • Highest gap in poverty rate (No. 49)
  • Highest gap in percent of residents who have at least a high school diploma (No. 51)
  • Highest gap in NAEP test scores (No. 44)
  • Highest gap in voter turnout for the 2012 election (No. 30)

And when it comes to how much racial progress Minnesota has achieved over time, the state comes in at No. 50 – with only Maine ranking worse, Wallethub found.

Similar findings were detailed in a recent New York Times story titled "Minneapolis's less visible, and more troubled, side." The article looked at disparities and racial tensions in Minneapolis that have been brought to the forefront following the shooting death of Jamar Clark.

The shooting sparked more conversations about race, from policing to how lawmakers should address economic and educational disparities in the upcoming legislative session.

The Star Tribune recently featured a group of black leaders in the community, who discussed their challenges when it comes to racial disparities.

Wallethub released these ranking in light of recent racial tensions across the United States, and ahead of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.
