Minnesota Realtors reconsider safety measures after death of Arkansas agent

The recent death of a well-known real estate agent in Arkansas has Minnesota Realtors re-evaluating safety measures while on the job, ABC 6 reports.

The Huffington Post says the body of missing real estate agent Beverly Carter was found in a shallow grave early Tuesday in a suburb of Little Rock, Arkansas. Carter, 51, was last seen alive Thursday when she reportedly went to show a vacant home to a prospective buyer.

Karen Becker, CEO of the Southeast Minnesota Association of Realtors, tells ABC 6 Carter's murder has devastated the membership.

"Realtors are with people that they don't know every day, so sometimes they've got to weigh annoying their client by asking for ID or making them drive separately with their own safety concerns," Becker told the station.

Becker says safety training is part of a real estate agent's orientation, but now some are individually considering self-defense courses.

Carter was declared missing after she failed to return home, and her husband found her car and keys at the vacant property, the Post says. Authorities charged Aaron Lewis, 33, in connection with the woman's disappearance Monday, and reportedly plan to upgrade the charges to capital murder.

ABC's "Good Morning America" says Lewis has admitted to police that he kidnapped Carter, but not to killing her.

Carter's death comes about three years after the death of real estate agent Ashley Okland, whose body was found after being shot to death in a model home in West Des Moines, Iowa. The case remains open because the killer has yet to be found.

WHO-TV in West Des Moines says local officials plan on following up on the Okland case with authorities in Arkansas in the aftermath of Carter's death.
