Nonprofits, charities and schools across Minnesota are thanking donors after a record-breaking day for philanthropy.

During Thursday's 24-hour donation marathon known as Give to the Max Day, Minnesotans donated $18.2 million. The Star Tribune notes the unofficial total represents a jump over the $17.1 million raised in last year's event. This was the sixth year for the fundraising extravaganza.

The online donations poured into GiveMN.org, which coordinates the day of online giving. Officials with the St. Paul-based nonprofit that manages Give to the Max Day will review the totals and provide an official total on Friday, according to the Pioneer Press.

The private Catholic school Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul was the top individual beneficiary, followed by Augsburg College and Second Harvest Heartland. More than 120,000 individual gifts poured in.

The day was marked by matching and challenge grants, incentives, stunts and fundraisers designed to bring attention to charities and heighten excitement for donors. At the Mall of America, teachers and principals rode a zip line across the ceiling of Nickelodeon Universe to spur donations.

Last year's event was marked by serious computer problems. This year's Give to the Max Day suffered smaller glitches; the main technical problem occurred around 1 p.m., when the tally of donations on the GiveMN web page froze but did not interrupt donations.
