Minnesota State system approves 3.4% average tuition increase

The increase will partially offset declining enrollment, which has created revenue losses for the system.

Students at Minnesota State colleges and universities will see their tuition rise by an average of 3.4% this fall.

The Minnesota State Board of Trustees approved the system’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year Wednesday. The system’s $2.5 billion budget calls for an average tuition of 3.4% across its schools.

The tuition increase will partially offset declining enrollment, which has created revenue losses for the system, according to board documents.

At Bemidji State University, that increase means annual tuition for the upcoming year is now $8,690. At Minnesota State, Mankato, tuition will be $8,281, while tuition will increase to $8,539 at Minnesota State, Moorhead.

The Board of Trustees also approved an average tuition increase of 3% last year.

Last month, the Minnesota Legislature approved a higher education bill that allotted the Minnesota State System an extra $56.4 million over the next two years, which was $63.6 million less than the system’s request.

“Since costs normally increase each year, this funding distribution presents institutions with a structural imbalance that challenges campus budget planning,” Board budget documents read.

The Minnesota State system isn’t the only higher education institution facing a tuition increase.

Late last month, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents approved a 1.5% tuition increase for undergraduate students statewide.
