A Milaca teen is talking about the fatal crash a week ago that claimed the life of his 13-year-old sister, WCCO reports.

Tristen Maetzold, 17, was driving his three siblings to school in Milaca Nov. 19 when he pulled out onto Highway 23 to make a left turn and was broadsided by a semi.

Katrina Maetzold, 13, died at the scene. Tristen, Patience Maetzold, 16, and Devon Maetzold, 11, were taken with injuries to North Memorial Medical Center.

Tristen credited Katrina with saving her siblings in her final moments.

He told WCCO that the windows of the minivan he was driving were frosted when he crossed the intersection, and that it was Katrina who saw the semi coming.

Tristen said Katrina yelled, "Semi!" just before impact and lunged over Patience, while he lunged over Devon.

“If it wasn’t for her even just shouting that out or jumping on Patience, I’m pretty sure it would have been a funeral for four instead of just one,” Tristen told WCCO.

Tristen and Patience were upgraded to fair condition at the hospital later in the day, but Devon suffered a brain injury and remains unconscious.

A funeral for Katrina was set for Wednesday.

The semi driver in the crash, Thomas Dietz, 51, of Milaca, did not sustain any injuries.

Tristen is still recovering from his injuries. According to WCCO, the teen has rod in his leg, a broken arm, and a punctured lung.

According to an initial report by the Minnesota State Patrol obtained by the Milaca County Times, none of the Maetzold siblings were wearing seat belts.

A fund for Katrina's funeral expenses has been set up in the Maetzold family's name at the First National Bank of Milaca.
