Minnesota teen sentenced for beating 2-year-old to death

The Minneapolis teen who admitted beating and stomping his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter to death will spend up to two decades in prison.

Cody Feran-Baum, who was 17 when he committed the crime but is now 18, was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in prison, KSTP reports.

He had pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in the death of toddler Sophia O’Neill, who he was babysitting at the time of the attack.

According to the charges, Feran-Baum told investigators the child began crying at some point on June 10 and that he simply "lost it" when she wouldn't stop.

(Editor's note: The charges detailed below are graphic, and could be considered disturbing.)

Charges against Feran-Baum say he confessed to putting her in a corner and kicking her in the back and, after that proved unsuccessful in ceasing her crying, laying the girl face-down on the floor and stomping on her.

She later became ill and died.

A medical examiner determined she'd taken multiple blunt-force injuries to her torso, splitting her pancreas and left kidney, damaging her liver, collapsing a lung and breaking eight of her ribs. She also had bruising on her scalp and other injuries.

According to the Star Tribune, Feran-Baum's lawyer told the court at sentencing that his client has been "tearful" about his crime, and that the judge eventually told him he would serve about 17 years of the 25-year sentence.

Though he was a minor at the time of the killing, he was tried as an adult.
