Minnesota toddler in a coma after being found in a pond Thursday
A toddler is receiving critical care at Mayo Clinic St. Marys Hospital in Rochester after being found floating in a pond.
Olmsted County Sheriff Scott Behrns said Thursday morning that the 18-month-old boy was found floating in a retention pond behind a residence on the 700 block of Willow Green Court NE in Stewartville around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
According to Behrns, the child was being watched by a family friend when the caregiver lost sight of him. The person watching the child called the boy's father, who arrived at the home and found his son floating in the pond. Behrns said the boy was in the water for no more than five minutes.
The child was immediately treated with CPR by people at the scene, with lifesaving efforts then performed by Stewartville first responders, Mayo Clinic Ambulance and the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office.
He was then transported to the hospital. His family informed the sheriff's office Thursday that he's in a medically induced coma, and are hopeful his condition will improve.
"We're hopeful this is going to turn out okay but it's going to take time to figure out," Behrns said, via ABC 6.
