A Minnesotan was honored Saturday for his service in the Vietnam War.

Steven Halverson, of Minneapolis, received the Bronze Star and the Vietnam Service Medal 40 years after his "distinguished" service, according to an email news release.

Halverson served in Vietnam from November 1969 to November 1970, with Company B, 125th Signal Battalion, 25th Infantry Division.

He also received the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation for "deeds of valor and heroic conduct while in combat."

As part of Saturday's event, Halverson wanted to make sure it highlighted the services available for struggling veterans because he had a "rough ride," KSTP says.

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has information on its website for veterans seeking help.

There were about 68,000 Minnesotans who served in Vietnam – 1,077 were killed, and 43 are missing in action, according to the Minnesota Vietnam Veterans Memorial website.

Saturday also marked Armed Forces Day.
