Minnesota weather: 40s in July?

All of those All-Star Game events coming up the next few days are certainly cool, but the weather forecast is even cooler. This is typically the hottest time of the year in Minnesota, according to AccuWeather, but it won't feel that way for the next couple of days. A chill will run up the spines of those coming in from out of town hoping to enjoy a little Minnesota nice in the form of warm temps.

Highs will likely only reach the 60s for many parts of the state Monday and Tuesday, and overnight lows may plunge into the 40s, according to WCCO.

This will feel more like football weather for the baseball fans filing into Target Field for Major League Baseball's All-Star Game on Tuesday.

"The pattern is reminiscent of a major polar plunge that occurred this past winter, which was referred to as the Polar Vortex," said AccuWeather meteorologist Carl Erickson.

According to the Star Tribune, temperatures are normally in the mid-80s for the Twin Cities at this time of year.

Paul Huttner of MPR reports that Monday may be the coldest July 14 in at least 128 years. The Twin Cities record for the coldest maximum temperature on that day is 68 degrees, set back in 1884. Huttner says it's quite likely we'll tie or break that record.

What a difference a day makes. While Sunday was a beautiful, albeit cool day, Monday will feel like fall in comparison.

According to the National Weather Service, Minnesotans experienced a similar July phenomenon five years ago.

Of course, this is not close to last winter's brutal polar vortex. But what's triggering it is similar. The cause for the drop in temps is cool air from the Gulf of Alaska plunging into the Upper Midwest, according to the Capitol Weather Gang .

So, tuck away those tank tops, shorts and sandals for now. Thermal underwear? Perhaps not. But polar (vortex) fleeces might not be a bad idea.
