A young Minnesota woman died in a four-vehicle crash in eastern South Dakota on Tuesday.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Brooke Thompson, 22, of Luverne, was killed in the crash on Interstate 90 northwest of Brandon, South Dakota.
The crash report indicates that three vehicles – Chevy Impala, Jeep Grand Cherokee and GMC Terrain – were traveling west on I-90 and nearly stopped where traffic was merging for construction ahead when a box truck hit the Terrain and then rear-ended the Cherokee, then pushed the Impala into the median.
Thompson was driving the Grand Cherokee and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other drivers were injured in the crash and charges are pending, according to the Argus Leader, which notes that Thompson was on her way to a interview for an internship related to her interest in social work, which she studied at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Thompson was also well known in Luverne as a figure skater and skating coach.
"She was a leader, a great performer, coach, and a friend. Brooke was never afraid to try new skills and worked until she got it right," said Blue Mound Figure Skaters, a team she skated competitively with and most recently worked as a coach.
A scholarship fund has been set up via a GoFundMe campaign in her name. As of Friday afternoon, nearly $4,000 had been raised for future participants at Blue Mound Figure Skaters.
