A Minnesota World War II veteran will receive the highest decoration France can present to a foreign citizen.

According to the Associated Press, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar will present the Knight of the Legion of Honor Medal to Jim Carroll of Bloomington on Sunday.

The AP reports Carroll is being honored for his service in western Europe during World War II.

The Legion of Honor was created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. To be eligible for the award the veteran has to meet strict criteria.

Interested veterans of all the different armed forces must have fought in at least one of the three main campaigns of the Liberation of France: Normandy, Provence/Southern France or Northern France.

Other actions in neighboring European nations are not considered for the award.

The file presented must contain a copy of the military separation record, the Proposal Memory application and a copy of a current identity document with a picture.

The AP notes Carroll was a private first class in the 101st Airborne Division. As a paratrooper he jumped into Normandy and Holland and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Carroll has also been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his World War II service.
