Minnesotans powerless against May storm

The May storm that dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of southeastern Minnesota knocked out power to thousands.

The Pioneer Press reports that when neighbors in northern Iowa and western Wisconsin are factored in, the power outages affected about 40,000 customers.

Red Wing was one of the hardest hit cities with more than 5,000 customers in the dark, Fox 9 reports.

In terms of snowfall totals, Blooming Prairie took Minnesota's cake with 18 inches reported. Rochester and Owatonna were close behind with 15 inches.

Schools were closed in several communities, but it seems that even kids who normally relish an unscheduled day off have about had it with winter weather in the middle of spring. One Owatonna 10-year-old told the Associated Press "It's not cool. I don't like the snow right now."

The wet, heavy snow pulled down trees and power lines. It also contributed to the collapse of a roof at a storage facility in West Concord. KARE 11 has aerial footage:

Later in the day power outages reached Duluth, where more than 5,000 outages were reported.
