A five-year-old child died in Chaska Saturday after being found in a lake shortly after going missing.
The Chaska Police Department says it was called at 4:30 p.m. after the child went missing from the 800 block of Walnut Place, having walked away from home on foot.
It sparked a major response including numerous law enforcement departments, with a drone, helicopter, search-and-rescue dogs, and a foot search employed.
During the course of the search, the child was found unconscious in the water of Brickyard Clayhole, a lake located a short distance from the apartment complex at Walnut Place.
Lifesaving efforts commenced, with the child then taken to a local hospital.
Tragically, the child was declared dead at the hospital, with Chaska PD saying the cause of death is believed to be accidental drowning.
"This was a tragedy,” said Chaska Police Chief Ryan Seibert. “We all grieve when a life is lost, and our thoughts are with the family during this time.”
