Missing St. Anthony man found dead in parking lot; suicide suspected

A missing St. Anthony man was found dead in a Roseville parking lot Thursday morning, the apparent victim of a suicide, just under a year after police shot and killed his son, FOX 9 reports.

Police discovered the body of Todd Hoffstrom, 56, at about 11 a.m. inside his car in a semi-trailer storage lot with a downspout rigged from the exhaust to the window, a common method for suicide, according to the Pioneer Press. A passerby noticed the suspicious vehicle and called police, WCCO reports.

He was reported missing on Sept. 29 and hadn't been seen in nearly 18 days.

Family members said Hoffstrom struggled with depression and alcohol abuse, which worsened after his son, Ted Hoffstrom, was killed by police during a standoff in Orono last fall. The 30-year-old attorney fatally shot Stephen Larson, 74, a prominent physician, after breaking into the doctor's home.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the young Hoffstrom with a semi-automatic weapon and were forced to shoot and kill him after a confrontation.

Reports at the time indicated that Larson, an obstetrician, had treated the young Hoffstrom's mother. The young attorney believed his difficult delivery was the cause of some mental and physical health problems, and consequently blamed Larson.

Larson was considered an expert in pelvic surgery, and was once named a "top doc" by Mpls. St. Paul Magazine. Colleagues said he could have retired years ago, but decided to stay at his practices in Edina and Burnsville.

According to the Star Tribune, the elder Hoffstrom and his wife began meeting with a support group in St. Paul, where he told members he'd "just love to drive his car in the river and drown."

"It was a red flag for all of us," his wife, Leann Hoffstrom, told the newspaper.

His family told KARE 11 that they made him promise to check into a hospital just days before he disappeared.
