Mississippi man spends 6 hours on river ice chunks

A Mississippi man unfamiliar with the vagaries of Northland weather got himself in way over his head this week, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

Brett Finch, a construction worker from Iuka, Miss., said he drove his black Buick out on St. Louis River ice Monday night in Superior just because it seemed like a fun thing to do, the newspaper reports. But his car got stuck, he started walking and fell into icy water. He spent the next six hours in and out of the water, grasping at – and even lying down on – chunks of ice, screaming for someone to rescue him.

Fortunately for Finch, a man who had been kicked out of his house after a fight with his wife wandered down to the river's edge to collect his thoughts, the News Tribune reports. He heard Finch and called 911.

Rescuers at about 3:30 a.m. used an airboat to fish Finch, who was surrounded by open water about 300 yards from shore, out of the river.

“I think I’m going back to Mississippi,” Finch told the News Tribune. “I’ve had enough of this snow and ice the last couple weeks. I’ve seen all I care to see of it.”
