It sounds like a movie: The heartwarming tale of a family pet that gets loose and goes missing, leaving his owner to search in vain and fear the worst. But just when it seems all is lost, old Copper finally makes his way back home.

Oh wait, that is a movie - it's Homeward Bound. And it's also a true story that happened in Minnesota.

Except the dog's name is McCoy, and he went missing over two years ago from his home in north Minneapolis.

Reunited after 2 years

The American Bulldog disappeared in May 2014 and was last seen running off with two other dogs in the neighborhood, according to a post on the Facebook page Lost Dogs Minnesota. McCoy was 14 months old at the time, and had never left his yard before, the post said.

His owner, Melissa Carlson, told WCCO she spent all night looking for him.

Carlson never found her dog, but says she never gave up hope. McCoy had a microchip implant, and Carlson made sure to keep her contact information for the chip updated even after she moved away, WCCO said.

Then on Dec. 11, Carlson got a phone call from the microchip company – McCoy had been found.

He was two and a half hours away from home at an animal shelter in Wadena, Carlson said in a Facebook post. Someone had removed him from an abusive home and dropped him off at the shelter, where workers scanned McCoy's microchip and got Carlson's information, the post said.

"I have been waiting for this day and secretly knew it would come," Carlson wrote.

She finally got her dog back the next day, and posted footage of the emotional reunion to Facebook.

What happened to McCoy over the last two years remains a mystery, but from the looks of it, he didn't forget about Carlson.

And he is back in a loving home just in time for the holidays.
