MN man gets record-breaking sentence for sex trafficking operation

A St. Paul man has received the longest prison sentence ever imposed on a sex-tracficker in Minnesota.

Rashad Ramon Ivy will be getting 700 months (58 years) for his involvement in an "extensive" trafficking organization, the Ramsey County Attorney saysOtis Washington previously held the longest record with a 40 year sentence.

In February, the 35-year-old Ivy was found guilty on multiple counts, including engaging in sex trafficking, solicitation to practice prostitution, and criminal sexual conduct.

The attorney's office says Ivy was the ringleader and "criminal mastermind" behind the illegal trafficking organization.

Prosecutors say he recruited, enticed and sold at least seven victims to dozens of men throughout the Twin Cities in 2014 and 2015.

With the help of two other defendants – Tarris Leeshawn Trapps and Danika Sterling Johnson – Ivy would recruit women on the streets, telling the women how attractive they were and luring the victims to an apartment, the complaint says.

There, the men would convince their victims to join their scheme with promises of "making money, getting new cars and living the dream," officials report.

Ivy was arrested after he is said to have beaten one of his victims so badly that she needed medical attention. She reported the abuse and Ivy was taken into custody.

His co-defendants have also been convicted. Trapps has been sentenced to 52 months in prison for sex trafficking and solicitation. Johnson has been sentenced to a year in the workhouse for conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.

Sex trafficking in Minnesota

According to the 2014 Human Trafficking in Minnesota Report, convictions for sex trafficking more than doubled from 2012 to 2013. There were 31 and 63 convictions, respectively.

Before then, there had never been more than 18 convictions in any given year.

Counties – such as Washington, Hennepin and Ramsey – have started efforts to combat the rise in crime.
