Investigators are now questioning a suspected hit-and-run driver following an accident that claimed the life of a 54-year-old mother who had stepped out her car on a northern Minnesota highway.

It was one of two incidents involving people on foot being struck and killed by cars in Minnesota overnight.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Princeton resident Patricia Wolter, 54, was riding in a Saturn on Highway 95 in Isanti County Monday night when it side-swiped a van headed the opposite direction, setting in motion a chain of events that ultimately ended with her death.

The driver of the Saturn pulled over after the accident, and when Wolter got out to check the car's damage, she was fatally hit by another vehicle, KSTP reports.

The state patrol, at this point, describes the car in question as an "unknown vehicle traveling westbound."

According to a Department of Public Safety (DPS) email update received by BringMeTheNews, a tip led authorities to the suspected hit-and-run motorist.

DPS also says the driver of the car Wolter was riding in is suspected of drunk driving.

"How do you leave a human body down the road like it is a deer?" the driver of the Saturn said to KSTP of the suspected driver. "I just don’t understand how they could do that."

Just hours later on early Tuesday morning, an unidentified pedestrian in Pine County was fatally hit by a Volvo semi truck headed north near Willow River, according to the state patrol.

The driver was not hurt in the incident. No other details have been released.
