MnSCU budget proposal includes lower tuition at 2-year colleges

While tuition at Minnesota's state universities is poised to increase in the fall, two-year colleges will see their rates hold steady this year and decline next year under the budget proposal scheduled for a vote this week.

MPR News reports trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system will vote Wednesday on a budget that would extend a freeze at the two dozen state colleges for another year, before reducing tuition by one percent the next year.

MnSCU says the tuition break will benefit 69 percent of the system's students, MPR reports.

The higher education bill state lawmakers passed last month specified tuition relief for two-year schools.

The four-year state universities are in a different situation, though.

The Star Tribune reports tuition at those campuses would rise by 3.4 percent under the proposal. That's an average increase of $233 and would push the average tuition over the $7,000 mark, the newspaper says.

The University of Minnesota is considering a tuition hike, as well, after the Legislature declined to provide the U with enough additional aid to extend a tuition freeze.

Last month, the editorial board at the U of M student newspaper, the Minnesota Daily, expressed disappointment that the U's freeze would not continue but applauded lawmakers for making community and technical colleges more affordable.
