MNsure enrollment deadline is Tuesday

Health insurance shoppers have until the end of the day Tuesday to enroll for insurance through the state's new MNsure website.

If consumers sign up by Tuesday and pay their first month's premium by Jan. 10, they can be eligible for insurance that is effective Jan. 1, according to MNsure.

Anyone who misses the pre-Jan. 1 enrollment deadline has until the end of March to enroll in a plan before they face any penalties, the Associated Press reports.

A previous enrollment deadline of Dec. 23 had been moved to Dec. 31 to accommodate shoppers who have had trouble navigating the troubled site. MNsure has been under fire from critics since its launch, initially because users had trouble enrolling for insurance plans through the site. The new agency has been beset by bad publicity on issues ranging from long call-center wait times to a data breach earlier this fall.

Meanwhile Monday, MNsure's Board of Directors plans to meet at 3 p.m. Monday and an update from new interim executive director Scott Leitz is expected.

Leitz took over when previous executive director April Todd-Malmlov abruptly resigned earlier this month, after several months of widely publicized problems with the website and lower-than-expected enrollments.
