Moorhead ice cream shops welcome spring and serve up tradition

Spring has sprung – meteorological spring, that is – and two ice cream shops in northwestern Minnesota are celebrating by reopening their doors.

Tuesday's high in Moorhead is well below freezing, but that's not stopping the shop owners from scooping up tradition and kicking off the ice cream season.

The Dairy Queen in Moorhead first opened in 1949 and is one of the oldest in the county. The shop has a tradition of opening for the season, regardless of the temperature, on March 1.

In 2014, Moorhead saw record-breaking subzero temperatures, but that didn't stop the shop from serving up some their own blizzards. In fact, team members told Valley News Live that a "tons of people" still showed up.

The Moorhead location is also one of DQ's best kept secrets. It still operates under a franchising contract signed about 70 years ago.

That means the historic walk up shop has some extra wiggle room to do things its own way. For example, it offers a wide variety of items customers won't see at modern "Grill and Chill" outlets.

Another ice cream stand in Moorhead opens its doors Tuesday. Tastee Freez also has a March 1 tradition, unless temperatures are below zero or there's a blizzard, InForum reports.

Duane Elofson – who owns the stand – told the news source their stand doesn't usually get as much publicity as Dairy Queen does, but they still stay "smoking busy."

Both shops are typically open March through October.
