More families could join bias suit against St. Paul schools

More families are mulling whether to join a racial discrimination lawsuit filed against the St. Paul school district, a lawyer for the plaintiffs said, the Pioneer Press reports.

Plaintiffs in the case are also suing the Heights Community School principal and former sixth-grade teacher Timothy Olmsted. They allege that Olmsted discriminated against black students and that his supervisors did not act on it.

The students involved in the suit have said Olmsted made numerous racist comments in class.

One student told WCCO earlier this year that Olmsted "told the whole entire class that it is easier for him to teach rich white folks than poor black people."

A lawyer for the district did not respond to the Pioneer Press's request for comment on the possibility of new plaintiffs joining the case. Lawyers for the district in the past have said they intended to "vigorously defend the lawsuit."
